On New Year's Day 1776, George Washington ordered the raising of the "Continental Colors" to honor the newly formed Continental Army. The first national flag of the United States was raised on nearby Prospect Hill in Somerville, so it would be visible for miles around - most notably in British-occupied Boston. The colors of the thirteen stripes varied. It has been noted that
red/white,
red/green, and
red/white/blue stripes were used. |
